About this speaker
Monaye Johnson, formerly known as Breya Johnson is a cultural worker, writer, and organizer dedicated to advancing reproductive justice, Black health, abolition, care ethics, memory, and Black feminisms. She served as the Deputy Director of Organizing at Girls for Gender Equity, were she helped lead initiatives on survivorship, reproductive justice, and political education. Most notably, a survivor grants redistribution program.
At the Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI), Breya worked to enhance the health and well-being of Black women and girls through the creation of the first reproductive justice education cohort still running to this day.
She is a trainer on transformative justice, conflict resolution, bystander intervention, and reproductive justice fundamentals. Her research focuses on disposability politics, radical love, desire, and Black health, with findings disseminated through various publications, presentations, and social media.
She holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy & Gender Studies from George Washington University, where she received the Ruth Helm Osborn Research Fellowship Award and 3rd Place in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at GW Research Days. Her academic foundation in Women's Studies and Psychology from Towson University, coupled with her political education work at the Rising Majority and leadership roles at BYP 100's DC chapter, has shaped her commitment to reproductive and gender justice.
Monaye's work bridges theory and practice for, healing, and collective liberation. She also runs an Instagram healing blog, @Blackreadingtoheal, using the writings of Black folks as a source of memory and healing modality.
